R.U.R
Rossum's Universal Robots
by Karel Kapek
Characters adapted for film by Yasmin Archer, photographed by Aoife Clarke.
(2017)
R.U.R is a play set in a dystopian future, where robots that look like humans take over the world. My concept is based in an alternate 60's, and the robots are made from phosphorescent organic matter. As they begin to lose their minds once they gain a soul, the leading Robot Radius tears away his synthetic skin that was made to make him look like the humans that created him.
I wanted to explore what made a robot look like a robot in the most subtle way, and I thought that they might embody humanities idea of perfection. the female robots resemble the perfect woman. And the male robots represent the male perfection.
This project showcases injury makeup, sculpting wax injuries, experimental materials, wig dressing, fantasy makeup, 60's period makeup, ageing, freckles, facial hair, blemishes.

Robot Radius
modelled by Frank O'Malley
This is the stage in which he loses his mind and tears away his synthetic human flesh, revealing the phosphorescent organic matter that he is made of. In this scene he is watching the humans before he kills them.
For the wound, I used glow in the dark spaghetti and blue alcohol coloring.
I digitally enhanced his eyes to glow.
Robots Radius and Sulla
modelled by Frank O'Malley and Eimear nocter.
In this scene (left) Radius has just killed the humans.
(right) Sulla is the head of the organisations secretary, and an earlier version of robot then Radius.
I wanted the robots skin to appear shiny and plastic and their hair to seem sythetic as well as their eyebrows drawn on.

Robot Helen and Human Helen
played by Holly Eve-Kane
(left) Robot Helen is the last version of robot the most refined and realistic.
(Right) Human Helen has human imperfections such as freckles blemishes. and wrinkles.
